FIRST AND FOREMOST, LET’S TALK ABOUT SAFETY

Although for centuries rag dolls have been embellished with buttons, ribbons, yarns, and in some cases nuts, branch, bones etc.   We, as an “enlighten” and more safety conscious generation now recognized that:  How dolls are made, what they are made of and  what is added to them has the potential to become serious safety hazards. This is especially true for infants and young children who are prone and love to put everything in their mouths.

HERE ARE THE SAFETY FACTORS AND GUIDELINES TO CONSIDER AND ENFORCE WHEN MAKING ANY BSJ DOLLI:

Anything small enough to fit inside a child’s mouth is a potential choke hazard; particularly for infants and toddlers 3 and under.

Use extreme caution and consideration of your child’s maturity level when selecting and adding embellishments, clothing and body parts to any BSJ Dolli, such as:

  • Buttons, baubles, beads, bells, bows snaps, hook and loop closures etc.

  • Ribbons, yarns, fibers, bands, ties, appliques, flowers etc.

  • Leg, arms, clothing, accessories, etc.

When making any BSJ Dolli only use:

  • High thread count/ Quilting quality 100% cotton scraps or clean 100% cotton recycled clothing

  • Non-toxic stuffing – unused high-quality Polyester Fiberfill

  • high-quality polyester Felt

  • Nylon Tulle

  • Non- toxic fabric acrylic paint, if ever in doubt of toxicity don’t use it (I use Folk Art)

  • Non- toxic fine/medium tip permanent fabric markers, if ever in doubt of toxicity don’t use it

Pre-washing materials is optional:

  • Optional especially when it comes to high thread count quilting quality 100% cotton.

  • However, if you have concerns about finishes, allergies, or shrinkage, prewash with approved laundry soap or a little white vinegar.

  • Both felt and tulle are washable if desired.  Be sure to follow manufacture’s guidelines…I have found that washing them can affect the texture.

When adding faces to BSJ Dolls I recommend using the following generally safe and non-toxic options:

  • Simple cross-stitched facial features

  • BSJ Iron-on felt appliques facial features (I recommend cross-stitching them for added security)

  • BSJ Iron-on felt appliques facial features enhanced with fabric markers (I recommend cross-stitching them for added security)

  • BSJ Iron-on felt appliques facial features enhanced with simple embroidery (I recommend cross-stitching for added security)

  • Paint facial features use non-toxic fabric paints only. Face painting is introduced at the intermediate dolli-making skill level

  • Or, use any safe method of your choice—considering the maturity level of your Kiddo.
